FAQ

Ski hire FAQ

The questions we’re asked most often at the counter, with straight answers. For anything specific, call your nearest shop: we’re happy to help.

01

Booking

How do I book my ski hire?
Online at ski-republic.com, choosing one of our 4 shops in Montchavin or Les Coches. Enter your dates, pick kit for each skier and confirm. Every step is explained on our booking page, with a direct link to each shop. It only takes a few minutes.
Should I book in advance?
You don’t have to, but we strongly recommend it during the school holidays, when some sizes go quickly. Booking online guarantees your kit, and discounts are often available on ski-republic.com. Outside the holidays, walking in usually works fine too, though the choice may be more limited.
Which shop should I choose?
The one on your way from your accommodation to the lifts. In Montchavin: Les 3 Glaciers and Village. In Les Coches: Centre and Wengen. See our shops for addresses and opening hours, or give us a call if you’re unsure. We’ll point you to the closest one.
Can I change or cancel my booking?
Changes and cancellations follow Ski Republic’s terms, shown when you book and in your confirmation email, so have a read before you confirm. For small tweaks on the day, such as a different size, just speak to the shop. They’ll tell you what can be done there and then.

02

Collection and return

When can I collect my kit?
From your chosen shop during opening hours, usually on your first ski day. Many guests prefer to pop in the evening before so they’re ready to go in the morning; ask the shop whether that’s possible for your dates. Either way, your kit will be waiting under your name.
What should I bring to the shop?
Your booking confirmation, ski socks, and everyone who’ll be skiing so we can fit them. Knowing each person’s height, weight and level helps us set the bindings. You may be asked for ID. Allow a few minutes per person for fitting and adjustments.
Where and when do I return the kit?
Normally to the shop you collected it from, on your last hire day before closing time. If you’d like to return it elsewhere or at a different time, ask when you collect so there are no surprises. Let us know too if you’re leaving early on your last day.
Can I leave my skis at the shop overnight?
Some of our shops offer ski storage, and our Centre shop in Les Coches has heated lockers. Services vary from shop to shop, so check the shop’s page or ask the team when you collect. That way you’ll know whether to carry everything back to your apartment each evening.

03

Equipment

What can I hire?
Adult and kids’ skis, snowboards, boots, helmets and ski touring kit. Each comes in several ranges depending on your level. Everything is on our hire page. If you’re torn between two ranges, we’ll help you decide in the shop, based on how and where you like to ski.
Can I swap my skis during my stay?
Yes. Ski Republic offers Flexski to change kit during your stay and Multiglisse to switch between skis and a snowboard; the terms are shown when you book. If your kit doesn’t feel right, come back to the shop and we’ll sort it. Tell us what isn’t working and we’ll suggest an alternative.
Is the kit well looked after?
Yes. Our shops have a workshop to prepare and service skis and boards, and boots are dried and disinfected after every hire. If anything seems off during the week, pop in and we’ll take a look. A damaged edge or a loose binding is quickly sorted in the workshop.
How do I choose the right range?
It mostly depends on your level and how you like to ski. Our guide on which skis to hire helps before you book, and the team fine-tunes things with you in the shop, after a 3D foot scan in our equipped shops.

04

Kids

From what age can children hire skis?
We kit out children from their very first steps on snow, usually around the age of 3. Our kids’ ranges go from toddlers to teenagers. See kids’ ski hire for the details. We set ski length and boot size on the child in the shop.
Do children have to wear a helmet?
It isn’t a legal requirement on the slopes in France, but we strongly recommend it, and most ski schools ask for one. You can add a helmet to your booking and we’ll check the size on your child in the shop. A well-fitted helmet shouldn’t move or pinch.
Do the children need to come to the shop?
Yes, ideally. Ski length and boot size are set on the child, not from a guess. The 3D scan in our equipped shops is quick, and most kids rather enjoy it. Bring thin ski socks for the fitting and, if you can, the hat or helmet they’ll wear.

05

Payment and insurance

Which payment methods do you accept?
Online bookings are paid on ski-republic.com. In the shop we accept bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) and French Chèques-Vacances. If you’re unsure about a particular payment method, call the shop before you come. Payment terms for online bookings are shown before you confirm.
Do I need to leave a deposit?
Ski hire shops often ask for a deposit or a card pre-authorisation when you collect your kit. The terms for your hire are shown when you book, and the shop team will confirm them on the spot. Bring a bank card in the name of the person who made the booking.
Am I covered for damage or theft?
Damage and theft cover is usually offered as an optional extra by ski hire shops. Check when you book whether it’s available and exactly what it covers, or ask the team when you collect your kit. If something happens, tell the shop quickly and keep any useful paperwork, such as a police report for theft.

06

Shops

When are your shops open?
Our shops follow the resort’s season, usually from mid-December to late April; last season they were open from 12 December to 24 April. Opening hours vary by shop and day of the week and are listed on each shop’s page. Do check them before you come. Dates for the new season are confirmed each autumn and updated on this site.
Do you speak English?
Yes. Every winter we welcome lots of British and international guests, and our teams give advice in English as well as French, from boot fitting to choosing a range. Just ask in whichever language you’re most comfortable with.
