3D foot scan for better-fitting ski boots

Boots that are too big wear you out; boots that are too small hurt. In our equipped shops, a 3D scanner measures your feet in seconds, with no contact and socks on, so we can hire you boots in the right size.

Why boots matter so much

Boots are the most important part of your kit. They pass every movement on to your skis: if your foot slides around you lose control and tense up, and if they pinch, the day feels long by the second run. Your everyday shoe size isn’t enough either, because two feet of the same length can have very different widths and insteps.

That’s why we’ve equipped our shops with a Wintersteiger 3D scanner, from a well-known maker of rental and workshop equipment. It replaces the old sliding foot gauge with a precise measurement of each foot.

How the scan works, step by step

1. Keep your socks on

Ideally come in your ski socks. There’s no need to go barefoot: the scan is done with your socks on.

2. Step onto the scanner

Stand on the platform naturally. Nothing touches your feet and there’s nothing for you to adjust.

3. Your measurements on screen

Within seconds the screen shows a 3D image of both feet with their measurements: length, width and volume.

4. The right boot in the right size

Using those measurements and your level, we suggest the right boots, you try them on, and we adjust the fit together.

What’s in it for you

  • The right size first time: fewer try-ons and less back and forth.
  • More comfort: boots matched to the shape of your foot, not just its length.
  • Better control on the slopes: a well-held foot means skis that respond.
  • Great for kids: quick and fun, and children can’t always tell you when a boot is too tight.
  • Less time in the shop: the scan takes seconds, so you’re out skiing sooner.

Which shops have the scanner?

The 3D scan is available in our equipped shops, including our two Montchavin shops, Montchavin Village and Les 3 Glaciers. If the scan matters to you, give the shop a ring before you come or check its details on our shops page.

The scan is part of our in-store advice: it complements trying boots on rather than replacing it. Once they’re on, walk a few steps, bend your knees and tell us how they feel. If something rubs after a day’s skiing, come back and we’ll adjust or swap them.

Frequently asked questions

Another question? Call the nearest shop. Call

Do I need to take my socks off for the 3D scan?
No. The scan is done with your socks on, ideally your ski socks, since those are what you’ll wear in the boot. A thin ski sock gives a more accurate reading than a thick woollen one.
How long does the scan take?
The measurement itself takes just a few seconds. After that it’s the usual fitting: boots on, a short walk, adjusting the buckles. Overall it’s often quicker than the old way of trying several sizes until one feels right.
Is there a charge for the 3D scan?
The scan is part of our in-store advice when you hire boots from us. If you have a specific question about your hire, the easiest thing is to call the shop where you booked.
Does the scan work for children?
Yes, and that’s where it helps most. Children find it hard to say whether a boot is too big or too tight; the scan gives us a reliable starting point, which we then check when they try the boots on.
