What it means
Making sense of the dates
The villages of Montchavin (1,250 m) and Les Coches (1,450 m) close a little earlier in spring than La Plagne’s high-altitude resorts: makes sense, as the snow melts lower down first. Late in the season it’s often still possible to ski higher up; check which lifts and links are still running at that point.
Early in the season, not every lift and run is necessarily open from day one. The area opens as the snow allows, so check the live piste status on La Plagne’s official website or app.
Our shops
When are our ski hire shops open?
Our Ski Republic shops in Montchavin and Les Coches open for the winter season, usually from mid-December to late April, in step with the resort. Our shops’ Ski Republic listings recently showed opening from 12 December to 24 April: please treat this as a guide only.
Each shop’s exact dates and opening hours for 2026-27 are published on our shops page as soon as they’re confirmed. Out of season, you can already plan ahead: online booking is explained on our booking page.
Picking your week
When is the best time to ski?
Mid-December
The season kicks off, with a quiet feel before the festive rush. Snow cover varies from year to year, so keep some flexibility.
Christmas and New Year
A festive, very popular week. Book accommodation, lessons and kit early.
January
Often the quietest spell, with cold days and good snow. Ideal for building confidence on emptier runs.
February
French school holidays are staggered across several weeks in February and early March, and UK half-term usually falls mid-February too: it’s peak season, so plan ahead.
March
Longer days, plenty of sunshine and snow that’s often still good higher up. A lovely time to ski.
April and Easter
Spring skiing: firm snow in the morning, softer in the afternoon. Ski early, then make the most of the sunny terraces.
Good to knowFrench school holiday dates are published by the French Ministry of Education. If you’re coming from the UK or elsewhere, compare them with your own holidays to avoid, or aim for, the busiest weeks.
Local tips
Planning your trip around the season
- Book your kit online as soon as your dates are fixed, especially in the school holidays: your size and range are guaranteed.
- Arriving on a Saturday? It’s the busiest day in the shops, with transfers arriving all day. Ask your shop whether you can collect your kit the day before your first ski day: it saves queuing in the morning.
- Early and late season, choose forgiving kit: snow can be firm in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. Our guide on which skis to hire explains the options.
- Families: book the children’s ski lessons early, then the kit. See kids’ ski hire.
- Check the piste status the day before you arrive, especially right at the start or end of the season.
Staying informed
Snow, weather and lifts: where to find reliable info
Opening dates set the framework, but snow cover decides things day to day. When planning your trip, stick to official sources: La Plagne’s website and app for piste and lift status, Météo-France for the forecast and, if you’re heading off-piste, the avalanche risk bulletin.
Once you’re here, just ask us: we ski here all winter and are happy to tell you which sector has the best snow that day, and which kit will make the most of it.
Out of season
Booking before the season starts
Our shops are closed outside the winter season, but you can still book online with Ski Republic to get organised in advance. Choose the shop nearest your accommodation, your dates, the range and everyone’s sizes, and your kit will be ready when you arrive. Got a question before the season? Drop us a line via the contact page and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
