Why wear a helmet?

Helmets: second nature for the whole family

In France, wearing a helmet on the pistes isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s strongly recommended at any age. It protects you from knocks in a fall, a collision or a brush with a fence, and it keeps your head warm on cold days. For children it’s a no-brainer; for adults it’s now the norm.

Some ski schools may insist on helmets during lessons, so check with your children’s school. If you hire a pack, a helmet may be included depending on the option you choose, for adult ski hire and kids’ ski hire alike.

A proper fit

How we find the right helmet size

A helmet only protects you properly if it’s the right size. In the shop we measure your head, then check the fit with you:

  • It doesn’t move when you shake your head, with the adjuster dial tightened.
  • It covers your forehead, about two fingers above your eyebrows.
  • The chin strap is done up with room for one finger underneath, no more.
  • It works with your goggles: no gap between the top of the goggles and the helmet.
  • No beanie underneath: a thin neck warmer is all you need to stay warm.

Accessories

Accessories: hire or buy?

Depending on the shop, you’ll find a range of accessories for sale. To check what’s available to hire or buy on the day, it’s easiest to ask in store. Here’s the checklist for a good day on the slopes:

Goggles

Essential in bad weather or flat light, and compatible with your helmet.

Sunglasses

For bluebird days: the glare off the snow is strong at altitude.

Gloves or mittens

Warm and waterproof. Mittens keep little hands warmer.

Ski socks

One thin, knee-length pair, so your foot is held snugly in the boot.

Neck warmer

Handier than a scarf and works with a helmet.

Sun cream

High factor, even when it’s overcast, plus lip balm.

Local tips

Little things that make a big difference

  • Add a helmet to your booking if your pack doesn’t include one: it’ll be waiting with the rest of your kit. See our booking page.
  • Try the helmet on with your child’s goggles: a poor match is the number one cause of fogging and discomfort.
  • After a heavy fall, let the shop know: a helmet that has taken a big knock needs checking.
  • Make the most of the 3D foot scan for your boots: a well-fitted helmet and warm feet make for a great day.

Frequently asked questions

Another question? Call the nearest shop. Call

Is a helmet compulsory for skiing?
No, French law doesn’t require one on the pistes, but it’s strongly recommended, and some ski schools may insist on helmets during lessons. With us, a helmet can be included in your pack or hired separately.
Is a helmet included in the hire pack?
It depends on the pack. What each option includes is shown when you book online. If your pack doesn’t include a helmet, you can add one or simply hire it in the shop.
How do I know if the helmet fits?
It shouldn’t move when you shake your head, it should cover your forehead to about two fingers above the eyebrows, and the chin strap should leave room for one finger only. We measure your head and check the fit with you in store.
Can I hire goggles or gloves?
Which accessories are available to hire or buy can vary by shop and through the season. The easiest thing is to ask your chosen shop directly; the team will tell you what they have in stock.
